I have been in different hospitals, but only the staff in West Kendall ICU made me feel that I am part of their family. My wife is critically ill, and this is one of the most challenging times of my life. She was intubated for about a month. Sedation was off for a few days, but she is not waking up. Susana is always there to comfort me and to reassure me that everyone from the intensivist, consults and the nurses are doing their best so that my wife will get the best care possible.
Susana has nursing skills and knowledge that make me feel at ease every time I needed more information about my wife's condition. She takes her time to explain every detail of the procedure that needs to be done and to give information on every medication that she gives to my wife, including the indications and side effects. Susana is competent and professional, she asked permission from me before they provide information to my wife's visitors. She gives accurate feedback and daily plan of care. She is very kind and gentle, she talks to my wife before doing any routines, like turning to sides, doing mouth care and bathing, even though my wife is sedated. Susana's compassionate care, family-focused by staying at the bedside next to my wife, listening to me without interrupting, following through on requests, letting me know the frequency of the next pain medications and the duration of the next procedure, keeping me updated of the next plan of care, and simply asking me what I need from an emotional, and spiritual standpoint is essential in truly understanding the patient's loved one.
Susana shows her concern by being a patient's advocate and by asking me if I need any further assistance from other professionals such as pastoral care and social services. They ensure that daily care is done on a timely basis and they ask for assistance if needed for their patient's safety. Susana is committed and dedicated, by following up throughout her shift to make sure that my wife's pain medication is effective. One time, my wife's heart rate was very high. Susana took her time to explain the cause of the elevated heart rate and the intervention needed to stabilize my wife. Reassuring me that the patient's comfort and safety is her top priority gives me peace before I go home at night. Susana is a great asset to this organization. I am blessed to have her as my wife's nurse.
