I stepped off the elevator to visit my husband who just had major surgery and was greeted by Susan who was wheeling my husband off to emergency surgery for internal bleeding. She immediately pulled me aside to fill me in, and said "Do you want to give him a kiss?" We raced to the elevator but didn't make it. Susan then raced with me to the stairs and led me to the 4th floor in time to kiss him just before going through the OR doors.

Susan took me to the waiting room and sat with me while I sobbed. She brought me tissues. She came back repeatedly to check on me and keep me updated. Susan ordered me a dinner to ensure I had something to eat. Four hours later when he was successfully resting in ICU, Susan came back again to check on me and my husband. All it took was her reassuring smile.

I would like to nominate Susan for The DAISY award for her exemplary example of caring and concern. She didn't have to keep checking on me, bringing me tissues and ordering me a dinner, but she did. She didn't have to find me in the ICU to see how we were, but she did. To this day, I think of her kindness. It is nurses like her that make Bon Secours great. Susan is a treasure and a cornerstone of superior nursing for her knowledge and her helpful loving kindness. Susan is the best of both worlds. My husband later told me she was the one when the internal bleeding was discovered who took charge the situation quickly.

As a follow-up, when my husband had his medical port removed, I ran into Susan outside the waiting area and she remembered me and my husband. Amazing. I am very thankful for Susan and her compassionate care that night. She made being alone during a very scary time a little more bearable and I thank her.
