While each nurse tries their best to make each patient feel comfortable and tend to their medical needs there is one nurse who stands out as being a loving component on the floor: Susan. Efficiency is so important, but when mixed with compassion and Susan's kind and gentle way, one could not ask for more in a caregiver.
Susan never walks by a ringing call bell or shies away from the word "help." She is often seen engaging with her patients and their families developing a connection with them where she is able to anticipate their needs. One family member went on to say this about Susan, "Even when not assigned to my wing, I would see Susan on the floor as I did my 'laps', and there was always a sincere and concerned questioning as to how I was doing. When she was assigned to me, Susan's words were so encouraging and helpful in getting me through my next plateau of complications with my recent procedure."
Susan's dedication and loyalty to the unit go far beyond the care of the patient and the families she interacts with, she is a mentor to the new staff as well. Susan is a unit Heparin champion, and most recently took it upon herself to create a "cheat sheet" for the new nurses on the unit. She realized that the new nurses were having a hard time grasping the concept of Heparin administration and that they might need additional support and education. She quickly got involved and reached out to the staff and presented her educational material to them on her own time staying late into the next shift.
