Susamma Charles is the nurse who most often administers my bi-monthly infusions at Holy Cross Hospital. She is a highly skilled and compassionate nurse who cares for many patients with complicated conditions on a daily basis. I wish to pay tribute to Susamma by nominating her for the DAISY Award.
I first came to Holy Cross Hospital a year ago when a new intravenous medicine was approved for my disease. Because the drug was just released on the market, training was provided on how to mix and administer the medicine. Even before my first appointment, and despite the fact that I was the only patient to use this medicine, Susamma agreed to be trained and to learn about my disease. Susamma continued to show interest in my well-being and spent an evening of her free time attending a patient meeting where physicians spoke about my condition.
Susamma is the heart and soul of the Infusion Center and makes sure each patient is greeted at the door, made comfortable with lunch and a blanket and treated as soon as their medicine arrives from the pharmacy. Regardless of the number of people being infused simultaneously, Susamma is vigilant about how drugs and units of blood are administered. She monitors patients closely during their infusions and always is available to assist patients and nurses alike. Her constant presence in the infusion room and her careful and calm manner create a secure environment where patient can focus on getting well. I feel extremely fortunate to have Susamma Charles as my infusion nurse and I know I am not alone.
