Trish Batsell RN, Director of ICU, Cardiovascular Services and Stroke Coordinator nominated Steven Hooton for the DAISY Award. This is what she wrote:

Steven consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty. He originally started his internship in the Med/Surg area right out of school. He worked on the floor for two years and then accepted a critical care internship.

Steven has excelled in his nursing career here. He is bright, intelligent, kind, humble and caring. Steven is the kind of nurse that you want to be by your side in a crisis and when “all hell breaks loose”. He knows what to do and how to manage the most difficult of patients…whether it is because of their physical condition or because they are irrational. His interactions with patients and their families are very caring and compassionate.

Steven has transferred to the cath lab where he continues to excel in his role as a cath lab nurse. Steven has become proficient in every role in the cath lab. He is a resource to others. The physicians rely on his expertise everyday. Steven always remains calm especially in stressful situations. His quick response and actions demonstrate that he is a solid critical care nurse.

Steven recently received his CCRN certification, which is one of the highest critical care certifications.

A specific instance that demonstrates the character of Steven is as follows:

A code blue was called on a patient on the floor and Steven responded. He stayed with the ICU team when we moved the patient to the unit and even stayed there for another 2.5 hours to help manage this very critical and unstable patient. We ended up coding this patient three different times and Steven was there every step of the way to help.

He is always more than willing to help, especially when the ICU is busy. He often relieves the telemetry tech and nurses for lunch. Steven is the epitome of an excellent nurse. But more than that, he is an example if the culture that sets LPMC apart from the rest. He is the fabric of the culture that says that “WE CARE”.

We are proud of DAISY Nurse Steven Hooton, he truly is an extraordinary nurse.
