We as a family, have many options for hospitals ED from which to choose. The nurse assigned to A was Stephen. He was professional, polite, and helped in engaging A as he cared for her. Did I say that she is nearly deaf, English is not her language and she is 70+ lbs.? Stephen was able to get her to understand every procedure, as he patiently and respectfully explained everything from IVs, blood draws, and straight caths. In the last year, A has been seen in 4 EDs, had 2 inpatient hospitalizations, and 1 stay in rehab. To be able to start an IV on her frail, little 89-year-old body and veins never happens. Guess what? Stephen got in on the first try. I think the things that nearly made me fall off my chair is this: I have been a nurse for nearly 41 years. When Stephen told me he was a nurse for 7 months, I was shocked. His demeanor (I forgot to mention, my MIL usually doesn't want males to care for her) his skills, and his overall professionalism was that of a much more experienced nurse. He is a real asset to your department.
