Often nurses don't see in themselves, or in each other, how their care profoundly affects their patients and families. We as nurses ignore what is extraordinary in our "ordinary" nursing care. Often the most subtle acts of caring and connection make the biggest difference to our patients and families. I would like to recognize an extraordinary nurse, Stephanie Gragg. Recently she was recognized by a family member who stated that she was incredibly supportive, sympathetic and caring during the time his mother was in the Emergency Department. "She was constantly checking on my father and me. She was very attentive to our needs as my mother was in critical condition.".
Stephanie was recently involved in the care of the two children who expired due to a house fire. She helped manage the codes and was very supportive of her co-workers during and after the event. Her co-workers were very thankful for her during this time.
Stephanie also practices extraordinary behavior outside of our hospital and her dedication to the Wilkes Community College Paramedic and nursing program as she is a preceptor and instructor for these programs.
Hugh Chatham Memorial is proud to honor such an extraordinary nurse with The DAISY Award and thankful that she has chosen to work in our Emergency Department.
