During the morning huddle, nurses on the stepdown unit decided they wanted to do something meaningful as a Christmas project. They had participated in many traditional events and felt that there was something out there more meaningful. A group discussion led them to a desire to help the homeless that live in and around the woods adjacent to the hospital. They coordinated their efforts with Jacobs Well, a local Christian outreach organization, and were able to extend grace to many of the truly needy.
This group of amazing people and their families raised money and corporate donations of over $1,800. The group was able to fill over 100 bags with socks, hats, gloves, blankets, flashlights, batteries, toothpaste, toothbrush, peanut butter crackers, Keebler snacks and raisins. But they weren't done yet. The group decided a meal of warm soup and a peanut butter sandwich would make for a perfect evening. On December 16, the group of 19 set out to help the homeless and were forever changed themselves.
We honor today the entire Stepdown Unit Staff for their generous gift of compassion and Metis Koulogianes, Fran Glass and Beth Brock for spearheading the event.
These Nurses were honored with this DAISY Team Award: Fran Glass, RN; Metis Koulogianes, RN; and Beth Brock, RN
