Being extraordinary is an everyday occurrence for Stacey Doxey. Recently a husband and wife from Germany were on a cruise when he became very ill, was intubated and transported to SNGH for care. He was admitted to the GICU into the nursing care of Stacey Doxey. The wife was very upset over her husband's illness; and only speaking German it was very difficult for her to communicate her needs to the staff. As one staff member put it, "The patient's wife was so sad and so alone, we felt so bad for her". Being the strong patient advocate she is Stacey took it upon herself to look into the community for assistance. She contacted the Tidewater German Society, being very careful to protect patient confidentiality, to see if they could offer any suggestions to help us understand and facilitate the needs of this wife. That very day a member from the Tidewater German Society came to the GICU to see if there was any assistance they could provide to this couple. When the patient's wife heard someone speaking German to her she immediately hugged and cried to this person. The immediate sense of relief in having someone to talk to was so apparent and so overwhelmingly appreciated, the event had most of the staff was in tears as well. The two became fast friends and members of the society would visit with her daily and take her to lunch and dinner until her husband was well enough to be transported back to Germany. This support certainly changed this family's experience in an incredibly positive way.

This is the kind of care we know is typical of Stacey Doxey and why her peers think she is very deserving of a DAISY Award.
