I was a patient on Five west for 2 evenings and 2 days. It was a traumatic experience for me to have a catheterization after being ruled out of a MI and told that I had Congestive Heart Failure for the first time. I've been a patient of Lahey Burlington since having an MI and CABG in 2002 bypass by Dr. D'A. He literally saved my life. During the past 14 yrs, I have gotten remarried, had more grandchildren and obtained my Masters and Clinical Nurse Specialist certifications. After being an ED nurse for many years, including working at Lahey, I teach now at UMASS/Boston Nursing which I enjoy immensely.
...Stacey DaSilva, a true professional nurse, is an example of why the DAISY Award was invented nationally. Stacey was very astute with my medications, always arriving on time and efficiently. Even though she was busy, she always took time to attend to my needs and listen to my anxieties. I was thankful to have my care in her hands as I got comfort knowing she would be there whenever I needed her. Being a nurse and a patient is not an easy thing. Some healthcare providers take for granted that you "have it together" and assume you do. Being on the other side of the bed is a very frightful, un-controlling, unknowing experience. Your life is turned upside down when you least expect it. Stacy had a way of soothing that experience with her knowledge and efficiency. It was a pleasure seeing her arrive.
Stacy is not only a knowledgeable and experienced nurse, but she is very caring. She took time to tell me about her life as a mother and listened as I raved on about my grandchildren. She sometimes touched me when she was talking to me making me feel safe and guarded. Sometimes, we are so busy as nurses, we forget the hospitalized patient is going through emotionally. Stacey always knew.
It does my heart good to know that there are nurses that are not only exemplary with their skills but "are present" and truly "care" about their patients. I humbly ask that you award Stacy DaSilva the DAISY Award. I received this award in 2012 by UMASS/Boston and I know how much it meant to me. Stacy will be an example of how nurses affect patient's lives and make their outcomes so much better!
