Skylar started as a GN last year and has always been compassionate and caring to all of her patients. Whenever I do Nurse Leader Rounds, I always get compliments from the patients she took care of. She goes above and beyond her role to ensure that her patients feel they are important. This week, she actually did two great things that truly make her a true DAISY Nurse.
One of her patients had been admitted to the unit on several different occasions, and so the staff has gotten to know this patient very well. Throughout this past stay, he kept making jokes about having some drinks or would ask when the party is starting. As he was soon to be discharged with hospice, Skylar wanted to do something special to bid him farewell. She called 4343 to help her put together a "Fiesta" themed gift, inspired by the patient's infectious sense of humor. After making sure it was okay with his diet, 4343 got him a tray with some snacks and a frozen mango smoothie. Skylar bought a card and had everyone on the unit sign it to let the patient know they would miss him and wished him the best. The patient was so happy and left to go to hospice with a huge smile on his face.
In the same week, Skylar had another patient who was 93-years old, who came in as a "Jane Doe." The patient was brought in by ambulance to the ED because of a fall and had all her clothes ripped/cut because of the emergency. On the day when the patient was going to be discharged, the patient was very sad and was crying because she found out she had no clothes to wear back to her place, including her undergarments. Skylar requested for mesh underwear, but could not find a disposable bra to give the patient. Even 4343 did not have any. So Skylar requested a sewing kit from 4343 and she patiently sewed and mended the patient's bra that was cut in half by EMS. Skylar also requested a new pair of jeans and a t-shirt for her patient, with an extra pair of sunglasses to brighten up her day. When the patient found out, she broke into tears and gave Skylar a big hug. She said she had a lot of experiences in her life, including being in World War II, but she felt so relieved that Skylar was able to help with her anxiety and problem. She started dancing with her jeans and sunglasses on. She said Skylar truly made her day and it really meant a lot to her.
All of the PETALS attributes Skylar has consistently demonstrated since day 1. When her pod buddy is overwhelmed, she helps them without being asked. She is a genuine person and truly cares for her patients and their families. They listen to her and trust her to advocate for them. Skylar shines like a bright light to her patients!
