Shona has a wonderful bedside manner and it showed through the thanks patients would give him at the end of their visits.
When fellow nurses make such a significant impact on our patient's life it is hard to find the right words to precisely convey your appreciation for them. But I'll do my best because this night shift nurse Shona Zachariah on our floor, is so very deserving of being recognized. Shona demonstrates incredible compassion, clinical competency, and trust in working with our patients. Shona is a true professional who never waivers in his calm and steady manner while dealing with even the most critical patient's health situations.
I have witnessed his exceptional patient care both personally and professionally, but one example, in particular, comes to mind. We had a Rapid Response on our unit when one of my patients developed acute respiratory distress, he immediately came into the room gently took the patient's hand, and said, "My name is Shona Zachariah and one of the nurses here, don't be afraid we are going to help you," assisted with our response to the situation, and was extremely effective in calming the patient down. He even accompanied the patient to the ICU.
One night we had a patient who was difficult to deal with because his disease was affecting his mental status. One moment he was forceful, verbally abusive, and belligerent. The next he was barely interactive. Throughout it, Shona maintained his calm, cool exterior, and only ever treated him with the utmost respect and dignity.
I witnessed several interactions between Shona and his patients. Shona greeted each new patient with a smile and did his best to make them feel at ease. On our floor, patients are often very sick or have just received new and difficult diagnoses. He always did his best to make these patients feel comfortable. He gives our patients and everyone he works with his full attention. Always asking "do you need anything, can I help you with anything?" He is always willing to go the extra step to help out a patient. He has a wonderful bedside manner and it showed through the thanks patients would give him at the end of their visits. I am grateful that he is a part of our department. He brings our quality of care to another level with his wisdom, intelligence, and compassion.
As a fellow nurse, I look up to him and I aspire to be like him in my practices. Shona is a stunning example of what the nursing profession values, and I am honored to call him my coworker.
