Shelly Thomas-Katta, RN – The Troy Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses – July 2009 – Troy Beaumont Hospital

Shelly is really kind, caring and compassionate in her interactions with patients. She is very calming and does have that soothing voice. She practices the RROHC behaviors in her daily practice.

A patient was admitted with a diagnosis of jaundice that he had self diagnosed with cancer. His mother had died when he was very young and he had recently lost his brother to cancer, so of course his mind wandered and he thought his whole world stopped until the morning when he had the privilege of having a nurse by the name of Shelly Thomas-Katta take care of him.

He felt that Shelly was his own personal angel that sat on his shoulder through his stay. The first thing he noticed about Shelly was her smile which was infectious and lightened his spirit. Shelly introduced herself, put her phone number on a board in the room, pulled up a chair and sat next to the patient and just started talking. He voice was soothing and gentle. Shelly was kind, caring, compassionate, spiritual and just a genuine with a quick sense of humor according to the patient. Shelly’s caring nature extended onto the patient’s family.

Shelly is a great lady who changed this patient’s life in many positive ways. Shelly will continue to touch many people’s lives.
