After having been discharged, then readmitted in the ED, my friend was transferred to a room in the ICU. After a 10+ hour day, trying to determine why my friend was having seizures, we were relieved to find out that she was going to get the rest she needed.
Once in the ICU, and while Shelby was getting my friend settled, my friend began having a major seizure. Shelby jumped into action and followed protocol to help her through this. It was then that Shelby noticed my friend wasn't getting the oxygen she needed. After calling for oxygen, Shelby then noticed there was no pulse. It was then she made the call for a code blue, and immediately began compressions. She was able to get a pulse back. Shelby's quick thinking saved my friend's life. That wasn't where my level of appreciation or notice of her professionalism stopped.
After being intubated, Shelby provided reassurance and updates on my friend's condition to myself and her family. Not always were her updates easy to hear, but she provided them in a way that was comforting and professional. Her ability to lead a team of other care providers during that stressful situation, all while keeping her composure, was second to none. After my friend was stabilized, Shelby came right out to the ICU waiting room to give an official update to the family. It was clear, concise, and real.
