Within the Emergency Room of Security Forces Hospital on a daily basis many challenges are faced. The staff endeavor to deliver the highest quality patient care with empathy and compassion. Sometimes you meet a staff member who goes the extra mile either directly or indirectly for our patients and staff. On the frontline of this 101 bedded Emergency Room Shayne Clarkson reinforced a heightened awareness to Infection Control practices by becoming the Infection Control Link Nurse.

Working closely with her it became evident that Shayne is very committed, spending extra time educating patients, her colleagues, undertaking self-directed study. She would also ensure that the educational board is readily updated with information to promote best infection control practices.

With the ever increasing risks to our patients and staff, in particular the MERS-CoV which has taken a hold in the Kingdom, the organization addressed the impending challenges which propelled Shayne to step up her involvement in the unit. When asked to submit her hours for overtime compensation she replied "no need, it's compensation enough if no one gets infected".

This initiative has played a significant role, which has resulted in us having, to date, zero cases of MERS-CoV within our Emergency Department and the organization at large. This is attributed to the diligent work of our organization, the interdepartmental collaboration such as Nursing, Infection Control, Medical, Laboratory and Engineering to name but a few but it always comes down to the front-line staff. I am very proud of them all and in particular, Shayne Clarkson RN, for going that extra mile for her colleagues and our patients.

Shayne's DAISY Award nomination is endorsed by our Director of Nursing, the Infection Control Team and Director of the Emergency Department and is a testament to her dedication and passion to the profession of nursing.
