Serra is one of those rare individuals who are always giving of herself and time. Serra is always willing to help a co-worker, whether it is with a task on the unit or covering a shift. Besides being a wonderful teammate to her colleagues, she is a great beside nurse. I've managed her since March of 2011 and cannot remember a single complaint from a T10 co-worker, patient or family. Serra works very hard at her craft. In a relatively short period of time she has assumed leadership roles. As a preceptor and charge nurse, Serra sets a shining example for those around her.

In January I had received a letter from a recovery addict who had been treated for a wound on Tower 10 during the month. The patient was extremely grateful for the care she received from the entire staff and went on to mention how several of them had helped her in a variety of ways. One story though, stood out from the rest. As the patient explained,

"I want to thank Serra for going above and beyond. As I was doing my laps around the halls to get some exercise, Serra (who was not my nurse that day), saw me and made it a point to ask me how my surgery had gone and how I was feeling. I kind of whined a little, considering it had been three days and I still was not allowed to take a shower and it was driving me nuts. I told her I felt gross and my hair was greasy. After she finished attending to the patient that she was on her way to see at that time, she came to my room with a warm packet. She had also gotten one of those waterless shower caps. She warmed it for me and explained how to use it and that it wasn't a shower but it may help me feel better, which it did. That made me feel really special. Like the staff cared."

This is just one example of the heartfelt care that Serra provides every day. Serra is almost always mentioned for excellence during discharge calls and I frequently receive positive feedback for patient and staff. It has been my observation that Serra is both thoughtful and caring in her approach and in my humble opinion, deserving of this recognition.
