We recently had a patient on our unit that suffered from chronic pain issues. The site of his implanted Morphine pump became infected, so it had to be removed. The patient was really having a difficult time with pain control. That combined with a low blood pressure was making it difficult for our nurses to get control of his pain. The patient and his wife were concerned about this issue. Sean rounded on this patient and made quite a connection. In his talk with the patient, Sean found out that the patient had a Bull Mastiff at home. Sean also has the same kind of dog. He called up his wife and asked her to bring up their pet. He took the patient and his wife outside and surprised them with a visit from "Hockey." The patient and his wife were so overwhelmed with this act of kindness, they could not say enough kind things about Sean and the other nurses that were caring for him. This display of caring seemed to really turn around the way that the patient felt about his visit. It just took one interaction with the right person, Sean.
Sean is our day shift charge nurse on IMC, and he continually goes above and beyond not only for the patients, but for his co-workers as well. He is an asset to our unit and I think that everyone at Heritage, other managers included, know just how lucky we are to have him.
