My husband was admitted for five days. For the first two days, we felt that the process for seeing a specialist and being scheduled for diagnostic tests was going way too slowly. My husband had a bad gallbladder and was nauseous and couldn't turn over in bed without being sick. My point being he felt really bad while we waited. Sarah was our nurse at the beginning of Day 3 and as she introduced herself and began to outline the care plan for the next few days I got a little defensive and probably spoke to her a little sharply about the need to get the plan into action and get him feeling better. Sarah's response was something like, "I am your advocate as well as your nurse". She told me she would talk to the specialist and the scheduling people about the test and try to get him moved up on the schedule. She returned to our room many times to give us updates on what she was doing. This is what made us feel more comfortable, to know that someone who knew how the hospital worked was working for us. Her attentiveness felt very one on one. Even though we know she had other patients. All our nurses kept the whiteboard updated in our room but Sarah really modeled the "positive service behaviors" of the DAISY Award because she was very specific about the medications interactions, what to expect from each one, and listed the three different procedures he would ultimately receive. Sarah explained why each of the procedures was necessary, why they had to be done in order and how each one had a different purpose. We just wanted it all done at one time and to get it over with. She was extremely knowledgeable about who to talk to regarding our specific questions regarding anesthesia and complications we were worried about. Sarah deserves this DAISY Award because she demonstrates the compassion and expertise of an extraordinary nurse, and she kept a very positive and supportive attitude even when I didn't. Sarah showed courtesy to me by recognizing my frustration immediately that first morning and assuring me that she was there to help us. Sarah suddenly became our personal source of information and understanding. Which was extremely comforting to us. She clearly models attitude, courtesy, and teamwork in her nursing work.
