Sarah is special for so many different reasons. For starters, she contributes to the care of not only her own patients but also the patients of her co-workers. She is never "too busy" to help, and is always first in the room to help with a new admit or patient not doing well and can stay calm in intense situations. She regularly receives patients on the unit who have multiple complex needs because she does such a great job with therapeutic communication and comfort measures that help patients in many different situations.
Recently, Sarah received an admit from the ER in respiratory distress and right after the patient arrived we had to intubate. Sarah was assessing the patient and found bruising in unexpected areas. Sarah was quick to call the appropriate resources to find out what steps needed to be taken to ensure this patient received the care they needed. The entire time from the moment the patient arrived on the unit, Sarah explained what was going on and checked to make sure the patient was feeling okay. She continued to explain everything to the patient even though the patient was sedated. The patient may or may not have been "with it" enough to remember anything at that time, but Sarah showed her the utmost respect, compassion and was the best patient advocate for her when she needed it most. Sarah is a DAISY Nurse because this is just one example how she takes the time to get to know each of her patients and assess exactly what they need in times where they are most vulnerable whether that be extra warm blankets, an ear to vent to, or resources outside of the scope of a nurse. She is the epitome of compassion, excellence, respect, and advocate.
