Sara immediately tended to my husband's needs, but she also recognized that I was a mess.
My husband was admitted to the hospital with a perforated colon and a week later required surgery. The surgical procedure went fine but within 36 hours, his stomach became severely distended. He was rushed to ICU whereupon I met his nurse, Sara. She immediately tended to my husband's needs, but she also recognized that I was a mess. When I think back on it, I wonder how, with so much going on with my husband, could she even have recognized my pain. She knew my husband was critical and worked quickly because he was going to need immediate surgery. Yet, she kept reassuring me that the doctors would take care of my husband. She reminded me to let my kids know when my mind wouldn't allow me to think that far. When it was time for surgery, she walked us to the elevator, gave me a hug, and told me she would see me soon. She was right; we were back in ICU after his 2nd surgery where she greeted us with another reassuring smile. She took exemplary care of both of us when we were in ICU, and took care of my husband's every need so he could recover. Even when we were moved to a regular floor, Sara came to visit that first morning just to say hello. Sara learned that my husband's first night on the general floor was difficult because the bed was too short for his stature. She took it upon herself to not only arrange for an ICU bed to be taken to my husband's room but went above and beyond and delivered it herself. What a difference this made in my husband's recovery! He was able to rest without having a foot of his body hanging off the bed. My husband ended up in the hospital for over a month and without the kindness that Sara showed, his stay would not have been as bearable. Sara is an incredible nurse and a compassionate caregiver who has deeply touched our hearts.
