Ms. McCabe called to confirm an appointment with a demented veteran. He handed the phone to his wife. She reported she was on the floor and had been there for a while. The call got disconnected. Ms. McCabe reached out to a team member to ask the police to be called for a wellness check. The police arrived and the veteran (demented) reported everything was fine. When Ms. McCabe arrived at the home the police were not present. No one answered the front door. Ms. McCabe went around to the back of the house and saw the sliding glass door was open and she could see the wife laying on the floor. Ms. McCabe entered the home after announcing herself, then called 911. The wife reported she had been on the floor all night. While waiting for help to arrive, Ms. McCabe alerted the other team members to the situation. The Social Worker immediately tried to reach family members. EMS and police arrived. The wife was taken to a local hospital. Ms. McCabe alerted the police that the veteran was a vulnerable adult and could not be left alone. APS was called. The veteran was transported to RHJ VAMC for evaluation.
Without Ms. McCabe, who knows what would have happened to the wife. Her quick response ensured that the wife was taken quickly to a local hospital to be evaluated. She also ensured that the veteran was evaluated and cared for.
Ms. McCabe is a nurse with amazing work ethic and takes amazing care of our veterans and family daily. This often goes unnoticed, but the example above shows that she is an amazing nurse. Her commitment to providing top-notch care to our veterans, her advocacy for veterans and their families are highlighted in the example above.
