Sara was my preceptor for orientation. From the moment I met her, she exemplified St. Mary's Hospital core values, as well as what being a DAISY Nurse means. The first thing patients will notice about Sara is that she is compassionate, even to the most difficult of patients. She always takes thetime to listen to what each of her patients tells her no matter how busy she may be.
Sara's professionalism really impressed me also. I knew I could count on her to train me correctly. For a new nurse to the hospital, this was very important to me, as I want to follow all rules and procedures correctly. When I would make a mistake charting, she never made me feel stupid. Her criticism was always constructive and never negative. Sara is the type of nurse that isn't afraid to admit if she isn't sure of something. I believe this is paramount in protecting our patient safety. She taught me how to look up policies and procedures, as well as consulting our charge nurse or others. This made a huge impression on me because I know I can count on Sara and my other team members to guide me in the right direction.
Sara is an exceptional role model. I realized quickly she is a team player. She often gets the 4 AM vitals for the nurse aide if she is already going in the room. Not only does this help our nurse aides, but it helps our patients rest better and not be awakened again. Sara always helps any of her team not matter how busy she is. Everyone loves to work with her because we know we can count on her. Never once have I seen Sara leave something for someone else to do. She is involved in the fall committee and has inspired me to join as well. She can often be found looking things up to further her knowledge. One of my favorite things about Sara is her humor. She will laugh and joke with our patients or simply make them laugh. She is truly an asset to St. Mary's.
