I write today to tell you about a nurse I encountered at UPMC Mercy during my father's stay. My father was admitted to Mercy to have the lower left lobe of his lung removed. Weeks following the surgery, he was in MSICU. He agreed to have a temporary trach due to his inability to expel secretions. Sara was great; I did not have to ask her to suction him. She was so attentive; she could hear when he needed it.
Sara walked my father on the weekends without being asked. I had every intention to wash his hair one Saturday morning. When I came in, Sara had already done it. I cannot describe how it feels to leave my father with someone, like Sara, that I trust wholeheartedly. 5 weeks into my fathers' stay, he had a stroke and was moved to the 4th floor ICU.
Sara visited him on more than one occasion during that week. While he was there, his lung function declined. He was moved back to MSICU and he has improved daily since. Sara got my dad outside. Fresh air, sunshine, blooming tulips. Trach mask and all. I'm wholeheartedly grateful for her and wish you had a unit full of nurses like her. Her empathy, compassion, and care are immeasurable.
