Sara Bednar, BSN, RN, is everything it means to be a DAISY nurse. Her actions are demonstrative of the Children's values and guiding behaviors. Not only is she an excellent nurse, but she is also a great leader on West 11, always making herself available to assist and coach her peers. She is extremely welcoming and easily approachable, and she makes new employees and students feel at ease when she precepts them. Sara is one of the most valuable preceptors on West 11, as a nurse orientee would be able to learn so much from just observing her in her role. Her documentation of evidence-based nursing interventions and expert interdisciplinary communication sets the standard for inpatient nursing.

As co-chair of the Clinical Quality Improvement Council, a member of our unit's Partnership Council, a member of the PIV Infiltrate Work Group, and a member of West 11's Improvement Innovator Team, Sara stays very busy and is passionate about improving the health of all children. She not only ensures that she is delivering the safest patient care possible, but she is incredibly committed to having an impact on the care given by the rest of the team members. You can tell that she genuinely wants West 11 to be the best it can be. Due to her extensive involvement, Sara is able to bring a wealth of knowledge back to the unit and serves as a great resource by sharing her high standards for adherence with best practice interventions and hospital policies with those around her every time she works. She is an integral part of the West 11 team, partnering with her peers to favorably impact clinical practice.

Sara's positive attitude and fun personality allow her to develop great rapport with her patients and their families and form trusting relationships with them. She acts as a great advocate for her patients, and patients and families consistently report high levels of satisfaction with the service that she delivers. One parent stated, "She makes us feel very welcomed and comfortable while being in the hospital". It is easy to see that her patients are her number one priority.

Sara inspires her peers to do more to improve patient outcomes every day because of her clear commitment to lifelong learning. She seeks out innovative methods to improve patient safety and efficiency of nursing care delivery. Medical providers, ancillary staff, and her nursing peers have incredible respect for her practice. She is an amazing role model to all who know her for her ability to impact patient outcomes across the health system.
