Nurse manager Sandra Looby is credited with being an involved team member and great role model on the unit she manages. In fact, five of her co-workers, two physicians, one social worker and two nurses, nominated her for the DAISY Award due to her excellent management and leadership skills.
One physician wrote "Ms. Looby is extremely patient centered and does not hesitate to go the extra mile for the veterans on her unit." As a nurse advocate, she is credited with increasing nurse staffing to adequately cover the acuity of the patients on the unit. One nurse wrote that Ms. Looby was instrumental in obtaining needed medical equipment on the unit. The nurses on her unit write that staffing is fair, and write that Ms. Looby helps out on the unit whenever she can.
When a potentially serious error with medication stocking arose on her unit, Ms. Looby advocated for her patients and staff by taking it upon herself to investigate the problem. One nurse wrote, Sandy took it upon herself to meet with the pharmacist, and observed the root of the problem and took measurable standards to resolve the problem. One physician wrote, "Sandy Looby RN Manager did an excellent job figuring out the medication excess noted in the medication cart, even though the medication was administered properly. By doing this, she was able to clear the nurses from being accused that the medication was not administered properly."
"Sandy Looby went above and beyond in supporting her nursing staff, by seeing through a situation that could have reflected poorly on the 4AB nurses," wrote the social worker. Sandra Looby RN was awarded the DAISY award in appreciation of the high standards she displayed in support of the staff on her unit.
