It is without a doubt that Sam's superior clinical assessment skills, persistence, and care saved her patient from a fast-growing infection.
"Even though surgery would have been done in 24-48 hours, Sam decided to assess the patient's wound," her nominator wrote. "She felt the wound had deteriorated and needed immediate attention."
Equipped with the necessary communication and superior clinical assessment skills, Sam was able to convince her peers and the surgeon on call that emergent surgery would save her patient from further damage and pain.
"She collaborated with her peers which led to the wound nurses validating her findings. The surgeon who was out of town was called and photos were taken which led to emergent surgery that night. It was obvious that the patient trusted Sam, and although Sam may never see her again, her compassion and clinical skill will always be remembered by this patient. Sam likely prevented further damage, reduced emotional and physical pain, and with the help of her peers, changed this outcome for the better. She is an asset to the hospital and continues to become a better clinician."
