This was my second pregnancy and second induction. I struggled over the past nine months from extreme nausea, depression, and worry. I walked into the room ready to deliver my daughter and praying for a peaceful and calm delivery. Sam was the quintessential nurse. She had the answers to my questions before I even asked them. She was calm and confident through every procedure. But the thing that set Sam apart from the rest was her heart. I am pretty strong and I remained calm, quiet and determined through every contraction. When I finally realized I needed to push, I asked Sam if I was ready. She checked me and confirmed my suspicion. At that moment, I was lying on the bed and contracting. I reached up for my husband's hand and he was across the room. Sam was standing at the computer and doing her job but she saw my need and reached her hand down and grabbed mine. This may not seem like anything but she showed me empathy. This was exactly what I needed after having a hard pregnancy and feeling like no one understood. The impact of human touch, especially in a time of need is momentous. No amount of schooling or time can teach the compassion that she expressed. The rest of my delivery was exactly how I had prayed. During the remainder of her shift, she took care of me as though I was her own. She was exactly the kind of nurse I needed to make my birth story so beautiful. Thank you, Sam!
