Recently, while off duty and at a four-way stop light, Samantha witnessed a horrible car accident. As a result of the accident, the car was flipped upside down in the swamp. Samantha was the driver of the car that her family was in and immediately pulled over. Samantha did not hesitate with her family to stop to help the victim in the car. Her boyfriend and her brother jumped into the murky water to flip the car over and free the man who was trapped inside the car. When the man was freed he was brought up the muddy embankment and two off-duty nurses performed CPR on the man who was blue and unresponsive. These two nurses assessed the unresponsive man and began CPR immediately and continued CPR for several minutes before the police and paramedics arrived on the scene. Samantha's assessment of the unresponsive man along with feeling for pulses, maintaining an open airway and performing compressions helped bring the man back. She stayed at the scene of the accident to make sure the police and paramedics had the correct information about the events leading up to the accident. Samantha's unselfish actions and compassion for helping a complete stranger who was in need of immediate medical attention was vital in saving the man.
I am proud to work alongside Samantha who was compassionate, professional and very knowledgeable of the severity of the man's condition and what it took to sustain adequate cardiac compressions to bring the man back to life. When the police arrived and took Samantha's information she was very humble when they stated that she was a hero for her efforts in saving the man. I am proud to be the other off-duty nurse who also performed CPR beside Samantha. It is not every day I get to witness what a great nurse Samantha has turned out to be in her training but this Saturday I was lucky to work alongside a great nurse.
