Sabrina was caring for a patient in the ED at the end of the shift and she was visibly upset. I stopped to ask if she was okay and she told me about her patient. When she was done she stated we should be able to help in some way. The patient asked her to tell her son that he's doing a good job of taking care of her and Sabrina did. She not only took it upon herself to praise the son, she took time to teach him and explain how to care for his mom in a slightly different way that would decrease the likelihood of causing an infection. Sabrina did all of this while still making him feel competent plus she was able to pull together a few supplies and she gave him some reasonable alternatives to buy at home. The time she took and compassion she showed was admirable. In part, because of her persistence, a social work consult was ordered.
