We currently have a patient who is very ill and has liver CA. He is in need of lots of emotional support and has not come to terms with his prognosis. He still believes in that miracle. His prognosis is poor. He has been given great care and the nurses on our unit have a special spot in their heart for him, especially Ruth Merein. On New Year's Eve, his family could not be with him so Ruth stayed with him during her shift when she had down time so that he was not alone. She spent time talking about faith with him and being the emotional support that he needed that day. He made one request of her this shift: for crayons to color so that he could occupy his time. She came to me when I arrived and asked me if I had crayons with me. I told her no and asked her why? She was trying hard to hide her tears from me. Then she told me with tears streaming down her face. "The patient asked me for crayons and I don't have any." We talked a bit about the patient and she told me every time she works to have him as her patient. The beauty of the story is that 2 hours later she came back to the unit and I asked her why are you here? And there I saw in her hands a bag of crayons and a coloring book just for him. She was going out this night being it was New Year's Eve and yet she took the time to go home to bring this for him. He was so appreciative of this gesture. To some, it may be small but to him this gesture was everything. She showed her sincere and true compassion for a young man who had one small request to forget his sorrow and color his world with happiness. She continues to care for him every time she is on shift and provides excellent care. They have formed a bond and I can tell every time he looks at her he sees an angel. Her commitment to his care and emotional well being exemplify a DAISY Nurse.
