Our November DAISY Award winner spends much of her interview time reassuring the patient and educating them on the pre/post operative process. She is genuinely concerned about the person as a whole and makes every effort to make the patient and his/her family at ease coming into the perioperative process. A common question received by patients during the pre-operative phone assessment is "Will I see YOU the day of surgery?" Although is not routine of the PAS nurse to be available to every patient the day of their surgery, this nurse takes the initiative to make it a point to show her face either in the pre- or post-operative area. She will often mark her calendar with the name and date of surgery of a patient who may be exceptionally anxious about the procedure. She will review the patient record to familiarize herself with the patient prior to her visit which may be necessary as she speaks with many over the week’s time. "Fear of the unknown" can often be diminished with simply connecting with the person they may have originally established a comfortable relationship with. Patients are often very receptive and appreciative that she took the time to stop and wish them well!

Our November DAISY Award winner is Pre-Admission Services’ own Robyn Stowell.
