Robin Cerniglia took care of a very difficult patient for several days in a row, and she ended up being the only nurse he could open up to, enabling him to shed light on why he was being so difficult. As it turned out - he was afraid he was dying. This insight was only reached due to Robin's non-judgmental, calm and professional attitude, and refusal to just label him as a "difficult" person. It ended up making a huge difference for this patient. He and she could talk about his concerns and fears, as well as his wishes.
He told Robin that he felt much better afterward and became more pleasant and cooperative to the staff in general. A day after this important conversation took place, the patient had a massive stroke and never regained consciousness. But due to Robin's discussion with him the day before, I believe he left this life more at peace than he would have otherwise. I was really impressed with how Robin handled the situation. She was compassionate instead of judgmental. Although, in the end, it made a huge difference for this particular patient, for Robin, even though it wasn't the easiest thing to do, it was simply the right thing to do. Robin truly is a role model nurse in general, but I feel this showcases her special qualities exceptionally well.
