Rob cared for a patient that was getting ready to be discharged. Upon discharge, the patient confided to Rob and the Case Manager that he wasn't completely honest with the physicians when asked why he initially came to the hospital for care, and then went on to share the real reason why he was at the hospital. He told Rob that he didn't want to live at the time, and he attempted to kill himself. This was the very first mention of suicide in his stay.
Rob immediately took charge and enacted suicide precautions and thank goodness he did because, upon entry into his room, the patient had active thoughts and was planning to end his life right here in the hospital. When Rob found him, he sat and talked with him- connecting with him and encouraging him that he really does matter. Rob got a sitter for the patient, made his room safe and consulted with his doctor. He started a new medication regime to help him and after several days of treatment, he was dismissed safely back home.
The patient was so thankful of the care he received, he came back to the hospital to thank Rob for saving his life; he even shared that he went to a job interview that morning and he got the job! Way to go Rob for advocating for your patient!
