Renee received a critical ICU patient that was being held in the ER for the entire shift. The patient was very sick and required around the clock care which is often times very difficult to achieve with a very busy ER such as ours. Renee handled this challenge in such a professional manner that this patient improved through the 12 hour shift due to the amazing patient care that she provided to this patient. Not only did Renee ensure that the patient was cared for around the clock, she included other nurses in the care of the patient. Many of the treatments extended to this patient are skills that are often not performed during a patient's stay in the Emergency Department, however still pertinent skills that should be shared. Not only did Renee provide world class care to this patient, she ensured that the future of nursing at MRMC was educated on how to care for a patient that required this level of care. The hospitalist that shift wrote the following email to our director about the care provided to all patients:
The DAISY Award is typically given for outstanding work, but there are not enough flowers in all of Holland to pay adequate tribute to our ED nurses. This is one of the most amazing groups of professionals I have ever seen. I marvel not only at how well they handle their own ED patients, but the holdovers as well. Last night a complicated very ill ICU patient spent the night in the ED. The care could not have been better.
The ED is where it all begins. It sets the course for the rest of the hospital stay. The incredibly fine job you all do is essential in maintaining the high reputation of this hospital. You all have my highest regard.
