A's enthusiasm jumped up a few notches when describing her gratitude for the attributes of Gene Calma. A met Gene during the summer of 2017 when she was hospitalized for about 2 months. She gradually got to know him and even learned some about his background. A has experienced some issues that required wound care, so Gene's background in wound care has been quite helpful. Although getting an IV in A is quite challenging, Gene is routinely successful on the first attempt. A refers to Gene as her favorite nurse in the world but qualifies the statement by saying the only nurse that is better is her mom. She indicates she was recently in the hospital for about a month. During her stay, Gene came to visit her intermittently, even when he was not her nurse. On A's birthday, Gene ordered a slice of cake for her to celebrate, she was thrilled to know he remembered. She notes Gene is easy to talk to, listens when she is crying or needs to vent, is encouraging, and talks her down when necessary. A is legally blind, and Gene goes out of his way to meet her needs and make things a little easier. Her comfort with and trust of Gene on her care team was clear. In speaking with A, her earnestness was palpable. Her input during the conversation was more than two dimensional. I could feel A's compassion and gratitude for Gene was truly heartfelt. "Gene, as I said before, I will never be able to thank you enough for all that you have done for me. You are truly an amazing nurse. It is transparent that your heart runneth over with love, care, and compassion for people."
