The manager of our unit challenged the members of the UBC to come up with a way we could recognize the awesome EVS staff that is primarily on the unit day & night. The goal was for the UBC to get the entire staff involved and on board with the recognition since we promote unit collaboration and unit-based decision-making.
The project involved the preparation of a small gift to present to every EVS member of our team. A coffee mug was filled with several small gifts, wrapped with a plastic wrap, and tied with a beautiful red bow. The small gifts inside of the coffee mug included several small candies, a dedicated 'Thank You' card from our staff, and a $10 gift card from the Parkland Café.
Every item used to make these small gifts was donated from each of our staff members. In addition, our staff devoted time to put the gifts together. We reached out to the manager of the EVS team to ensure that we had an accurate list of names of the EVS members from our units.
The gifts were presented to the EVS staff members in December 2019. Recognition of the EVS Team embodies Parkland Values, CIRCLES.
Compassion- our staff wanted to ensure that our EVS co-workers felt the spirit of love through this small gesture of appreciation.
Integrity- our staff felt that by recognizing the EVS team, we would be able to transmit an honest admiration for the contributions that they make.
Respect- our staff wanted the members of the EVS team to know how much their work is appreciated. We respect the contribution that they make in helping us create a clean and inviting environment in which we provide health care to our patients.
Collaboration- our staff wanted the members of the EVS team to know that they are an important member of the healthcare team. We wanted them to know that collaboration with them ensures that we deliver excellent patient care.
Leadership- since Parkland creates a servant-led environment, we wanted our EVS co-workers to know that together we will continue to create this environment.
Excellence- we wanted our EVS co-workers to know that we recognize that their work is of high standards and performance. Each member of the EVS team contributes to the excellent care we provide to our patients and families in a meaningful and valuable way.
Stewardship- we wanted our EVS co-workers to trust that we will help manage our resources to bring value to our patients and taxpayers.
We truly believe that this project embodies all of Parkland CIRCLES. We can clearly see how much of a difference an awesome EVS crew can make to any unit. Without them doing what they do day in and day out, there is absolutely no way any area of the hospital could function. Realizing that this hardworking department can be overlooked and taken for granted is the reason why our unit wanted to take some time and say, "Thank you" and provide them each with a small gift from the entire unit.
This project involved the UBC rallying the participation of our staff from the unit, supporting the project, understanding the purpose of the project, and then the staff providing contributions to fund this project. It was easy for our staff to join the efforts because there was a consensus on the great appreciation that we feel toward the contributions of the EVS team. Once this was accomplished the decision on what we will do and how we will do it had to be made. We communicated with the EVS leadership to ensure we have all the EVS staff's names that primarily are assigned to the unit for day & night shifts. Headed by our UBC, group decisions were made on what gift was to be purchased based on the number of contributions received. The decision to provide a mug with inspirational words on it with goodies inside and a thank you card with a Parkland gift card in it. The next decision was when and how can we approach each EVS staff and personally say "thank you" and provide them with their gift from the unit. The staff that worked on the day of the EVS staff were designated to present that EVS employee with their gift, provide the thank you, and finally take a picture with them. The picture was sent to them if they wanted, sent to their leadership, and also sent to the Parkland NOW & Later magazine. We also posted the pictures on the unit's informational TV. We did this over several days in December 2019. It was a huge success. It was really a pleasure to just take some time to recognize others who make what we do a little easier. EVS staff can truly make a difference in the patient's stay. When it is done right, patients & families are happier, fewer complaints, and have a more positive impression of their stay. Clean and well kept up areas certainly make a difference in the hospital's compliance. Having EVS staff that are efficient, timely and team players makes our work just a little bit easier and allows us more time to focus on patient care. By the EVS staff being responsive, approachable, and efficient, our unit is able to turn around beds quicker which can only benefit the patients and hospital during this era of code capacity. It is our leadership and units that believe that EVS is truly a part of our team and showing them respect and appreciation for everything they do really does promote positive morale and increased quality of work.
Leadership proposed the idea to our unit's UBC. The UBC was chosen because they do represent the staff and provide a voice for all staff. It was important that this came from all staff, so the staff was asked to contribute what they could to provide this appreciation to the EVS staff.
This project was a unit-based decision. It was such a pleasure to see the smiles and yes, shock, from some of the EVS staff. It was such a surprise for them to be recognized by the unit for what they do. We saw many "tears of joy" when we were presenting them with gifts. They were excited to have their pictures taken with our staff members. Many of the EVS workers wanted us to forward them these pictures because they were excited to share them with their families. We believe that we have built a stronger relationship and teamwork with our EVS co-workers by acknowledging them and ensuring they we do feel they are part of our team. Positive morale and teamwork not only benefit the employees and hospital but also our patients and families by providing them with a clean and comfortable facility.
We believe that this gesture of recognition gave value and purpose to their work. Our EVS co-workers were reassured that they play a key role in helping the health care team fulfill our expectations by reliably maintaining a safe, clean care environment. We also believe that as a result of this recognition, our EVS team will take pride in the important role they play in patient safety and clinical quality improvement efforts.
