As a clinical social worker, I have had the privilege of working alongside Ms. Becky Toppenberg, RN on the Pediatrics ward at Madigan Army Medical Center. Ms. Toppenberg has consistently demonstrated the utmost in care and compassion for the patients and families whom she works with. I would like to take the time to recognize her for a particular situation in which she went above and beyond the call of duty.
Losing a child is one of the most difficult and painful experiences any parent can possibly go through. Because of our patient population, it is rare in our facility for children to come into the emergency room in grave condition. However, this particular day was different. A two-year-old child was brought to our trauma bay and was pronounced dead after extensive resuscitation efforts were attempted. As could be expected, his parents were absolutely distraught due to the sudden and unexplained death of their son. Routine post-mortem care is typically provided before families are brought in to the patient care room to say their final goodbyes. However, this situation was anything but routine. Many of the emergency department nursing staff had not previously performed this type of care for a child. Becky got word of the situation and proceeded to the ER to lend assistance and ensure that the memorabilia box was provided. She took great care wrapping him with warm blankets in order to facilitate getting fingerprints for the parents to keep. She carefully cleaned him and secured all remaining medical equipment in a way that made him look more peaceful and dignified. Becky volunteered to stay with the family, as well as mentor other staff to ensure that all aspects of his care were handled properly. Because of Becky's knowledge, professionalism and commitment to providing compassionate care, this family was able to say goodbye to their son in the best manner possible.
I am so very thankful that Becky was here to help on that day. She embodies all of the qualities of an excellent nurse. She is an example of human kindness and grace and I am grateful that we are a part of the same team.
