There was a particular paraplegic patient who had stayed with us for approximately half a year. The patient had many medical problems which were further complicated by his complex psychosocial family dynamic, depression, and often times refusal for care/treatment, and refusal to eat. Throughout this time, Rebecca developed a positive nurse-patient rapport with this patient and always requested to take care of this patient when she was on. Rebecca occasionally came in on her days off to visit and take him outside in his wheelchair to get fresh air. She encouraged him to increase his nutrition intake for healing, and sometimes even brought him his favorite food while on her way to work. She listened to him when he expressed interest in getting a degree. Rebecca brought him GED books and helped him research college scholarships. She was one of his biggest cheerleaders to help him get his life back on track. Rebecca truly models what primary nursing is all about.
