Becki has always stood out as an incredible nurse. She goes above and beyond, not only for her peers as an excellent resource but also for her patients and their families, taking on some of the most challenging patients on the unit. Today was an extraordinary example.
A very young patient was admitted as a trauma patient. Her injuries were extremely severe, difficult for any nurse or staff to see. The family was devastated. Becki took excellent care of the patient, but it was decided by the family to stop care and donate her organs, to help save others. Becki was committed to seeing this through, and she picked up an extra night shift to allow the family some continuity of care, so they could navigate the donation process and their feelings of loss and grief together.
Additionally, at the end of her extra night shift, Becki not only stayed over during the day shift to be with the patient and family all the way up to the OR but also got an organ donor honor walk organized. This is the first time our hospital has done this, and the hall was completely lined with staff showing respect and support. It was emotional for everyone, but it will hopefully give some closure to all those involved in her care and hospitalization.
During this time, Becki showed incredible strength. In between quickly planning the honor walk and coordinating with OR, Becki never faltered in her excellent care. She was a top-notch provider and gave some of the best nursing care I have ever seen.
