Ranier was so kind and understanding that the only way I can describe him is that there are many people who go through life just doing their job, there are others who like their job, and then there are those special few who are born to do it and love it and it shows in every action.
Ranier was friendly and personable from the moment he introduced himself to me. He seemed to pick up on the fact that I wanted to be an active partner in my health care as well as doing as much as I can for myself. Needless to say, that after a couple of times having to ask various nurses and staff to do things for me that I was not able, I became very frustrated and upset. Ray was doing his morning check and noticed that I was upset. He asked what was on my mind and stopped doing what he was doing on the computer and sat and listened to me.
I was lonely, in pain, and really needed a friendly ear at that moment. Ranier was very reassuring and understanding and made me feel better emotionally as well as looking after my physical well being.
I was extra surprised later that day when he had gone downstairs to the cafè and brought me back a cup of coffee! It was one of the things I was upset about. Not being able to get coffee for myself when I wanted some was one of those things that my mind decided was a huge crisis that morning. Little gestures like these are something that a friend would do for a friend and not someone who is there to just "do a job".
