Let me tell you of just one example of why Randi is a DAISY caliber nurse:

An exhausted and frightened mother brought a young patient into the EC . The child was having hallucinations that were causing the sensation of really scary bugs crawling all over the child's body - this had been being experienced for over 24 hours! This little one was terrified and Mother was exhausted and frustrated. The child was assigned to Randi's room. The case was quite difficult as the health care team was trying to determine why the child was having the hallucinations about bugs. It was determined that there had been a recent change to the child's home medication and the new dose was too high; a side effect was the on-going tactile hallucinations and sensations.

This little patient had been living with the "fight or flight" response for greater than a day and was worn out-- but continued to be extremely agitated and terrified and diaphoretic. The pediatric intensivist was consulted and recommended a medication to control the impact of the hallucinations. As Randi was preparing the dose she heard a scream coming from the room. She hurried in just in time to see the little patient standing at the end of the stretcher. The child jumped and was literally caught in mid-air by Randi! Randi then administered the medication and wrapped the child up in a bear hug. She sat in the rocking chair in the room holding and rocking this little patient for 2 hours. The child would rest a little bit fitfully and then wake in terror. She rocked and soothed as the medication took effect. The medication did not last long and Randi continued to hold the little patient until a PICU room was available and a medication drip was started to control the hallucinations.

In this case Randi took a difficult medical situation and figured out a way to be therapeutic and holistic for the child and mother. She exemplified Kristen Swanson's nursing theory that our facility subscribes to by being present with her patient and family for as long as it took to get the job done. While all nurses don't have the luxury of spending hours rocking a distressed child, in this case it was the only thing that helped the small patient. This example is just one of the many about Randi's nursing care. She serves as a resource nurse on nights and when the place is "burning down around you" Randi flashes her ever present smiles, keeps her cool and says "We'll take care of it." She participated in Clinical Ladder. She has attained certification as one of just four CPEN certified nurses in our facility, and was the first. She serves as a preceptor, resource nurse, certified car seat inspector, and ENPC instructor. We are so pleased and proud to have Randi Bos, RN, CPEN on our staff.
