Rakiba's communication and patient interaction skills were crucial in deescalating a dangerous situation. My frustration peaked, due to a lack of communication from the doctor on duty. My bag was packed, and I was ready to leave the hospital AMA. I waited nearly 5 hours for the doctor to visit with me. Sometimes, when doctors fail, nurses have to pick up the pieces.
Upon entering my room, seeing me dressed and ready to go, she quickly ascertained the situation. Rakiba sensed my frustration and anger and she calmly engaged me in conversation. During our conversation she was considerate and respectful, talking with me at length to determine the best way to achieve a positive outcome for me and my health. She made me feel as if I was the only patient on the floor, although I knew it to not be true.
She encouraged me to share my frustration and concerns, at length. In turn, she shared her concerns about me leaving the hospital AMA. Rakiba discussed realistic healthcare scenarios, should something happen to me outside of the hospital. She seemed sincerely concerned and sympathetic to my situation.
This simple conversation was an example of impressive patient interaction and communication skills which ultimately helped save my life. Rakiba created an environment where I felt valued and my concerns were heard. Into the wee hours of the following morning, I suffered a massive heart attack. Had she not convinced me to stay in the hospital, I would not be here to offer her an outstanding endorsement of her interpersonal skills.
She is one of the three nurses who were critical in saving my life. Words typed on paper seem terribly trivial, comparatively speaking. Thank you, Rakiba.
