I was admitted to the 5N unit midday as a result of complications during pacemaker implant surgery. I was very short of breath, my chest felt like someone was pushing down on it with all of their might. After spending more than an hour without receiving treatment, Rainer took the initiative, on my behalf, to get an x-ray ordered. As a result, I was diagnosed with pneumothorax. Rainer along with others were present during the insertion of a chest tube, making sure the doctor during the insertion had everything he needed. He stayed with me during the procedure, which was quite painful, despite local anesthetic and pain medications. I felt someone take my hand and hold it for the remainder of the procedure. I cannot express the comfort I took from that simple gesture.
Going forward, the care Rainer provided was outstanding. He did everything he possibly could to make sure that I was as comfortable as possible, anticipating my needs and exceeding all of my expectations. The compassion and kindness that I received from Rainer is something that I will always remember.
