Hearing the words Palliative Care is frightening. Hearing that it is time for Hospice services is even more frightening. Our journey with Hospice began in January of this year when my husband was placed in Hospice care. The path has been much easier to navigate because God truly blessed us with Rachel Dean, Hospice RN. From the moment Rachel first visited our home, we knew she had been placed into our lives for a reason. Rachel has become a steady part of our weekly routine, visiting twice each week. My husband was very skeptical about making the Hospice decision, and Rachel eased his mind with her calming demeanor and positive attitude. When asked how long we could expect, Rachel responded that she does not put a time frame on her patient care. She simply stated that her job is to make these days as comfortable and productive as possible. On good days my husband likes to piddle around the house. Rachel has helped him tinker with his truck, use sandpaper on the door and share cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. When our dog wasn't feeling up to par recently, my husband said he would ask Rachel about her! I realized then the magnitude of the bond between Rachel and our family. Not only is Rachel there for him, but she is very responsive to all my questions and concerns. We have had several private conversations as his condition has worsened. As we continue this journey, it is comforting to know that Rachel will be with us.
