I feel very strongly that without Rachel and her vigilance that many patients in the course of my two months would have had worse outcomes and potential complications.
The Shriners Reconstructive service is notoriously busy and difficult service for the plastic surgery residents given the high volume of patients who are cared for. It becomes difficult to ensure that each patient receives the same quality of care that one would expect for their own family member, and occasionally things slip through the cracks. However, over the course of my two-month rotation, I noticed that Rachel consistently and carefully ensured that each patient had needed preoperative and postoperative care coordinated, and frequently would catch omissions or mistakes that had a significant impact on patient care. Not only this, but she is genuine in her care for each patient. It is not uncommon for her to speak boldly (but appropriately) to the attending physician as an advocate for the patients and their desires, always with the desire to give each the best outcome. Daily, Rachel is always prepared to speak about each patient, their medical/surgical history, and planned procedures in a way that oftentimes exceeds the preparation of the residents. She is always respectful of physician time and when changes are needed, kindly and tactfully requests any needed changes/orders.
Indeed, I feel very strongly that without Rachel and her vigilance that many patients in the course of my two months would have had worse outcomes and potential complications. I consider this nurse a friend and she treats me as such, overcoming the divide that some feel between nursing and physician staff. She should be commended for their thoroughness, attention to detail, courage, leadership, kindness, and compassion for our patients. I feel confident saying that our reconstructive service could not function without her. Thank you!
