Last night was a very difficult night for my staff. We had a patient with us for over 17 days. We got to know him, care for him and his wife, and loved taking care of him. Preshus was his nurse who admitted him and had him many times throughout his stay. After his wife left, he looked at Preshus and said, "I am going to die tonight. I want the bipap off and I am going to die. Please don't let my wife know." Obviously, a very difficult situation. I believe he chose Preshus to be the one to care for him, and honor him and allow him to be peaceful. He knew it would be too difficult for his wife and decided he was going to die with Preshus at his side. Other staff members were very much a part of his calm passing. Everyone held his hand and supported him into his journey.
I am so heartfelt and thankful for my caring staff, especially Preshus. She was able to see the beauty of his death, and understood the way he wanted to say goodbye. Preshus has a kind and gentle smile. She is gracious and giving. She is heartfelt and it shows. For me and my staff, those who knew our patient, this was a gracious act of kindness, tenderness, a beautiful tribute, and I am thankful for all she did to make his passing comfortable while allowing him to feel cherished and respected.
