A Neurohospitalist from Gilbert Neurology (and Chandler Regional Medical Center's Stroke Medical Director) came to my office after Leadership Rounds yesterday and asked how we could go about recognizing one of the 2B Staff RNs, Peter Vangompel, for his genuine kindness towards all of his patients and his attention to detail with them.
The doctor praised Peter for having a questioning attitude and always seeking clarification. He said that "Peter is right for coming to me when he has questions". He went on to say that "Peter lives out what Human kindness is, and in a nutshell, is a really good nurse."
I can say that Peter does the same thing with me, but I welcome his summation of the patient, what he's done and what needs to be done in order to meet all our Stroke Core Measures. He is a conscientious Neuro nurse who wants to be the best Stroke nurse he can be and he seeks out opportunities of all sorts to better his understanding of all things Neuro. I often hear him educating patients on their meds, side effects, and I always hear, "is there anything else I can do for you?" before he leaves their room.
His tone with patients is kind, soothing, and not rushed. I can count on Peter to make sure that his Stroke patients are well cared for, informed/educated, and "all t's have been crossed and i's dotted" before they are discharged. That helps us maintain our Stroke GWTG Gold+ Award status at Mercy Gilbert.
