I came to Rex for a scheduled induction for my second child. I was 40 weeks, 2 days and filled with a whirlwind of emotions to be going in for an induction - excitement, nervousness, some fear, relief, happiness, etc. So many of my worries were instantly eased when I met my nurse, Patricia. She greeted my husband and me with such friendly and cheerful tones. She was efficient and professional in performing the intake paperwork and questionnaires. It was quite evident that she had been thorough in her chart review as she knew all about my pregnancy history and only had to ask for some clarifications and elaborations where it was necessary. She was incredibly respectful of my wishes and birth preferences and provided equipment, advice, or support wherever and whenever possible to help me achieve my labor and birth goals. She made me feel like I was her only assignment with how attentive she was; however, I know that she did, in fact, have other patients. She worked seamlessly with her colleagues, calling for assistance or providing assistance to other nurses when needed, assisting both the anesthesia and OB doctors, etc. She was personable and funny and put my mind at ease with her funny anecdotes and stories, but she gave my husband and me plenty of private time to enjoy the special quiet that exists before delivering a baby too. Patricia was so wonderful that I told her I prayed I could have my baby before shift change so that she could be my push nurse too. Her response was that she would pray too so surely God would answer our plea. He did! Patricia gave me such wonderful pushing advice and coaching that after only 37 minutes of pushing I delivered my 10-pound 5-ounce son! He was born at 6:37 pm, about 23 minutes before shift change! Just enough time for Patricia to celebrate with us and give her handoff to the night nurse. I truly felt that Patricia was an angel sent to me from God above because my birth experience was nothing short of miraculous and I have her to thank for so much of that. The care she provides to patients and the teamwork she demonstrates with colleagues is truly extraordinary.
