A dialysis unit is unlike other hospital units in that we return 3 days a week for our care. In my unit we became a “Family” quite fast and readily as the staff takes us under their wings and treats us as if we were their wounded family. We laugh together, we cry together, we learn together and we grieve together. A year ago I suffered a serious brain bleed and after rehab and returning to my “family” I was told by the dialysis administrator that she put Patricia in charge of keeping an eye on me, to make sure I wouldn’t do anything “funny”. For a year she kept her promise and kept me safe. Patricia died last month, and her whole dialysis unit/family grieved. There was not a dry eye for days. Patricia was easy to love and gave her love freely in return. Now my personal angel is gone too. Thank God she taught others to keep me safe. I loved Patricia dearly and will miss her for a long time. She deserves the DAISY Award.
