Our patient was attempting to continually get out of bed despite any redirection methods that the 1:1 sitter or I tried. He had extreme phobias and high anxiety, and from the moment he woke up he would attempt to get out of bed and walk out of the room. The patient was extremely weak and a high fall risk, which contributed to the seriousness of the situation.
Passadena entered the room and saw how exasperated I was for the safety of the patient. Rather than argue with him, she very calmly walked over and held him upright so the patient could stand still for a moment and catch his breath. Passadena continued for the next 30 minutes to reassure the patient that everything was going to be alright, while she rubbed his back and provided support until the patient was calm enough to sit down on the bed.
Passadena exemplifies all the qualities of compassion and respect for her patients, and she is the most deserving recipient of the DAISY Award.
